Breastplate

Engineered to keep your saddle anchored level over steep hills, sharp turns, and rough country, the Syd Hill breastplate collection delivers superior saddle stability, impact dispersion, and freedom of movement. Built from premium leather and or wipe-clean PVC, our range includes traditional 3-point stock breastplates, 5-point ergonomic jump breastplates, Western Y-shaped breast collars, and synthetic endurance models. Featuring solid stainless steel or brass hardware, heavy-duty elastic inserts, and soft shoulder padding, these breastplates prevent backward saddle slippage while maintaining complete shoulder clearance across every discipline.

How Does Proper Breastplate Fit Prevent Shoulder Restriction and Girth Pinching?

A correctly fitted breastplate stabilizes the saddle without restricting the shoulder blade or compressing the windpipe. The central chest ring or padded junction must sit comfortably above the point of the shoulder and below the base of the throat, ensuring the horse can lower or extend its neck without restriction. Shoulder straps should lie flat across the neck muscles without digging in, while elastic inserts absorb movement as the scapula rotates back during jumping, galloping, or climbing steep inclines.

How Do I Know if My Breastplate Is Adjusted Too Tightly or Too Loosely?

Correct breastplate adjustment requires a balance between firm saddle retention and total freedom of movement. If a breastplate is too tight, the shoulder straps will pull the pommel of the saddle forward onto the withers, dig into the base of the neck, and restrict the back and forth rotation of the shoulder blade during forward movement. You should be able to slide a flat hand easily between the chest plate and the horse's skin. Conversely, if a breastplate is too loose, the leather will sag, bounce against the chest during work, or catch a foreleg hoof when the horse jumps or negotiates dense scrub.

Why Is a Running Martingale Attachment Used With a Breastplate?

A running martingale attachment, which clips onto the central chest ring of a breastplate and feeds the reins through two smooth rings, provides gentle, intermittent control over head height without locking the mouth. When the horse raises its head above a comfortable, functional frame, the rings create downward lever pressure on the reins, encouraging the horse to drop its nose and flex at the poll. Because the attachment is integrated directly into the breastplate, it stays centered against the chest without needing a separate neck strap, giving riders a clean, multi-purpose setup for jumping, chukkas, or fresh young horses.
