Learn About the Half Breed
What is A Halfbreed?
The Halfbreed Saddle is an innovative blend of Western and Stock saddle features - designed for ultimate versatility and comfort. As a modern hybrid, the Half Breed saddle combines the practicality of a Western saddle with the refined balance of a Stock saddle, making it a popular choice among riders for a wide range of tasks, including general riding, trail riding, breaking, polocrosse and station work.
Known for their exceptional comfort, Half Breed saddles are favored by trail riders and camp drafters alike. They are lightweight yet durable, ideal for both competitive and everyday use. The design integrates contemporary balanced riding techniques with the secure, supportive features of a Western-style seat, ensuring riders achieve optimal alignment of their shoulders, hips, and ankles. This balanced seat enhances the rider’s stability, allowing for improved balance, effective use of the seat and legs, and a more responsive connection with the horse. Blending the precision of a dressage saddle with the comfort and security of Western and Stock saddle elements, the Half Breed saddle offers an advanced and adaptable option for today’s riders.
What Is SHX & SHXP
SHX System: This refers to Syd Hill saddles that feature a changeable gullet system. The gullet alters the width of our flexible trees, which affects how the saddle sits on the horse's withers and shoulders. A changeable gullet system allows riders to adjust the width of this part of the saddle tree to better fit different horses conformations.
SHXP System: This system includes the changeable gullet feature along with interchangeable felt panels. These felt panels come two thicknesses, 12mm (standard) and 22mm. The interchangeable panels allow for additional customization of the saddle's fit and comfort. Riders can adjust the padding to better suit the shape and condition of the horse, providing flexibility in achieving an optimal fit.
These systems are designed to ensure that Syd Hill saddles can accommodate a wide range of horses comfortably by allowing adjustments to both the width of the saddle tree and the padding thickness
How Do I Know What Halfbreed Is Right For Me?
When choosing the right Half Breed saddle, several factors should guide your decision. First, consider your lifestyle and intended use for the saddle. For instance, if you'll be pushing the saddle to its limits on rugged terrain, a rough-out leather option like the Gibson Half Breed might be ideal for added durability. Next, evaluate your horse's shape and conformation: a compact horse may benefit from a saddle with a shorter skirt, while a taller, high-withered horse might need a saddle with more spinal clearance. Additionally, keep in mind that Half Breed saddles typically have seat measurements that are approximately 2.5 inches smaller than the listed size, due to the inclusion of the pommel in their measurements. This unique sizing should be factored into your choice to ensure a perfect fit.
