Fenders

Engineered to deliver close leg contact, rider support, and maximum lower-leg freedom, the Syd Hill fender collection provides superior durability for stock, half-breed, and Western saddles. Built from heavy-duty saddlery leathers, oiled full-grain leather, and reinforced webbing, our replacement fenders feature pre-turned shaping, smooth-sliding stirrup bars, and heavy-duty buckle adjustments. Designed to reduce joint strain and withstand hard station use, these fenders keep your lower leg balanced and comfortable over long days in the saddle.

How Do Pre-Turned Leather Fenders Reduce Knee and Ankle Strain for Riders?

Pre-turned fenders are shaped and treated during manufacturing so the leather holds a natural 90-degree twist toward the horse's shoulder rather than laying flat against the horse's barrel. Traditional flat fenders force the rider's lower leg to twist the thick leather continuously to keep the stirrup tread square to the boot. Pre-turned leather eliminates this constant torsional torque, relieving tension on the rider's ankles, knees, and hips while making it effortless to regain a lost stirrup on the move.

How Do I Measure and Adjust Fenders for Correct Lower-Leg Balance?

Proper fender length ensures your leg hangs naturally under your center of gravity without pulling you forward or forcing your seat back into the cantle. To adjust, drop your feet out of the stirrups while seated in the saddle; the bottom tread of the stirrup iron should sit level with your ankle bone. Adjust the fender sleeve or webbed buckle strap so the iron hangs at this height, allowing your heel to drop comfortably below the tread when boots are in the irons.
