What is the Difference Between a Traditional Stock Saddle and a Stock Fender Saddle?

While both styles feature the classic deep seat, supportive poley knee pads, and high security of an Australian stock frame, the difference lies in the leg setup and stirrup attachments:

  • Traditional Stock Saddle: Uses classic thin stirrup leathers mounted on traditional stirrup bars. This setup offers maximum flexibility, close-contact leg communication, and a classic look that accommodates standard riding boots.
  • Stock Fender Saddle: Replaces thin stirrup leathers with broad, free-swinging leather fenders attached higher on the tree. Fenders provide extra leg protection against sweat and chafing, distributing stirrup weight across the entire leg to reduce knee and ankle strain over long days.

Riders who prefer the refined feel of traditional leathers and effortless stirrup adjustments often opt for a traditional stock model, while those riding long hours on stations frequently choose fenders.

Why Are Poley Knee Pads Essential on an Australian Stock Saddle?

Poley knee pads are the defining safety feature of a traditional Australian stock saddle. Strategically angled on either side of the swell, these firm, hand-shaped pads rest directly above the rider’s thighs. They act as a secure physical stop during sudden movements, such as a horse propping, turning sharply on cattle, or negotiating steep downhills. keeping the rider firmly locked into the sweet spot of the seat. The geometry of Syd Hill poley pads is sculpted to provide maximum hold when you need it without restricting your natural leg position or seat movement during normal riding.

How Do I Choose the Right Seat Size in a Traditional Stock Saddle?

Finding the correct seat size in a traditional stock saddle depends on your upper leg length and hip structure rather than waist size or height alone. Traditional stock saddles are measured in inches from the inside base of the pommel directly back to the top edge of the cantle.

A proper fit should leave roughly two to three fingers of space between your thighs and the underside of the poley pads when sitting naturally in the deepest part of the seat. If the seat is too small, your thighs will jam tightly under the poley pads, restricting your movement and causing discomfort. If the seat is too large, you lose the protective function of the pads and risk sliding around during sudden horse movements.
