Learn About the Australian Stock Saddle

What Is a Stock Saddle?

The Australian stock saddle is renowned globally for its comfort and security, making it ideal for long hours in the saddle. Its versatility suits a range of activities including cattle work, starting young horses, everyday pleasure riding, trail riding, endurance riding, and polocrosse. It is also prominently used in Australian camp drafting competitions and stockman challenges.

Designed for optimal security and comfort, the traditional Australian stock saddle draws stylistic influences from English saddles but features a much deeper seat, higher cantle, and front knee pads for enhanced rider stability in challenging conditions. The saddle's design ensures a secure and comfortable ride, whether you're navigating rough terrain or spending extended periods in the saddle.

Securing the saddle involves a girth attached to billets under the flaps, similar to those on a dressage saddle, and a surcingle that passes over the seat for added safety. This combination of features makes the Australian stock saddle a reliable choice for various equestrian disciplines.

What is a Stock Fender Saddle?

The Stock Fender Saddle, or Swinging Fender, features the same seat and panel design as the well know traditional stock, only with the addition of swing fenders. The swinging fender enhances the saddle's original benefits by providing greater leg movement and comfort. Its forward position allows the rider to adopt a relaxed, armchair-like posture, allowing for a more
comfortable ride over extended periods. This model is suitable for many disciplines including general riding, trail riding, breaking, polocrosse or station work.

What Is SHX & SHXP?

SHX System: This refers to Syd Hill saddles that feature a changeable gullet system. The gullet alters the width of our flexible trees, which affects how the saddle sits on the horse's withers and shoulders. A changeable gullet system allows riders to adjust the width of this part of the saddle tree to better fit different horses conformations.

SHXP System: This system includes the changeable gullet feature along with interchangeable felt panels. These felt panels come two thicknesses, 12mm (standard) and 22mm. The interchangeable panels allow for additional customization of the saddle's fit and comfort. Riders can adjust the padding to better suit the shape and condition of the horse, providing flexibility in achieving an optimal fit.

These systems are designed to ensure that Syd Hill saddles can accommodate a wide range of horses comfortably by allowing adjustments to both the width of the saddle tree and the padding thickness
