Western Breastplate

Built to withstand heavy torque, steep inclines, and cattle work, Syd Hill Western breastplates and breast collars deliver heavy duty saddle retention and authentic Western presentation. Crafted from thick harness leather, oiled bridle leather, and durable hardware, our collection includes classic Y-shaped breast collars and hand tooled styles with basketweave accents. Designed to anchor your Western saddle firmly during fast turns, stops, and hill climbs, these breast collars combine rugged functionality with traditional craftsmanship.

How Does a Western Breast Collar Prevent Saddle Slippage During Heavy Work?

A Western breast collar attaches to the front rigging rings or dee-rings of a Western saddle and loops around the chest to fasten at the cinch strap between the forelegs. This triangular anchoring system prevents the heavy Western saddle from sliding backward over the loin when climbing steep hills or carrying rider weight during sudden acceleration. By keeping the saddle centered over the swell and bars, it maintains proper balance and protects the horse's back muscles from uneven shear forces.

How Should a Western Breast Collar Be Fitted for Optimal Functionality?

A correctly fitted Western breast collar sits comfortably across the center of the chest without pulling down on the saddle horn or up into the throat. The center ring should rest directly over the sternum, high enough to allow free leg extension but low enough to avoid pressing against the trachea. The side straps connecting to the saddle rigging should be adjusted firmly enough to keep the collar flat against the chest, with enough clearance to slide a flat hand underneath comfortably.
