What is the Difference Between a Stock Fender Saddle and a Half Breed Saddle?

While both styles utilize broad, free-swinging fenders for rider leg comfort, the key difference lies in the underlying tree construction and rigging design. A stock fender saddle is built on a traditional Australian stock saddle tree, featuring a classic narrow twist and pronounced poley knee pads. A half breed saddle blends stock saddle elements with a Western-style tree, offering a broader seat foundation, Western rigging options, and a hybrid balance point. The choice comes down to personal feel, stock fender models offer a closer, more traditional stock seat, while half breeds provide a slightly wider, Western-influenced weight distribution.

How Do Swinging Fenders Benefit the Rider?

Swinging fenders replace traditional thin stirrup leathers with broad leather panels that attach directly to the tree framework. This design provides several major advantages for long hours in the saddle:

  • Eliminates Pinching: The wide leather shield prevents the stirrup leathers and horse’s flank from pinching or rubbing against the rider's legs.
  • Reduces Joint Fatigue: By distributing stirrup weight evenly across the lower leg and allowing a natural, unhindered leg swing, fenders significantly reduce strain on your knees, ankles, and lower back.
  • Enhanced Leg Security: The broad leather surface provides increased contact against the horse’s sides, giving you a firmer, more stable grip during sudden movements or steep ascents.

How Do I Know What Size Stock Fender Saddle I Need?

Stock fender saddles are measured in inches from the inside of the pommel directly back to the top of the cantle. Finding the correct seat size depends on your upper leg length, hip width, and riding preference. A properly fitted stock fender seat should allow approximately two to three fingers of clearance between your thighs and the poley knee pads, allowing you to sit deeply into the cantle without feeling jammed or loose. Choosing the correct fender length is equally important, your stirrup setup should allow your legs to drop naturally into a balanced line beneath your hips without reaching the end of the fender adjustments.
