Stock & Halfbreed Saddlery

Engineered for long station shifts, high-country mustering, and competitive campdrafting, the Syd Hill Stock & Half Breed Collection combines over a century of traditional Australian saddlery heritage with modern biomechanical precision. Constructed from heavy-duty full-grain leather, reinforced trees, and high-tensile stainless steel hardware, this range includes classic Stock saddles, versatile Half Breed saddles, contoured Stock breastplates, and handcrafted Stock bridles. Built with supportive poley knee pads, deep seat pockets, and changeable gullet systems, Syd Hill stock gear keeps you secure in the seat during sudden turns while ensuring your horse works comfortably under heavy loads.

What Is the Structural Difference Between a Traditional Stock Saddle and a Half Breed Saddle?

While both designs are built for Outback utility and rider security, their tree construction and fender hang dictate different riding positions:

Traditional Stock Saddle: Features classic open-swing stirrup leathers set directly over the bars of the tree, traditional double-rigged girth billets, and broad poley knee pads. This design places the rider in a secure, upright posture ideal for long station rides, steep mountain terrain, and traditional mustering.

Half Breed Saddle: Combines the deep, supportive seat and poley knee pads of an Australian stock saddle with the swinging fender system and western-style rigging of a Western saddle. The fenders attach directly to a top bar, allowing free leg swing forward and back, which gives riders maximum flexibility for campdrafting, speed work, and long hours in the saddle.

How Do Poley Knee Pads and Deep Seats Provide Security Without Blocking Rider Movement?

Poley knee pads are angled, molded leather supports built into the front swell of the saddle tree. Positioned just above the rider's thighs, these pads create a firm barrier that catches your legs during sudden stock turns, propping horses, or sudden drops on steep inclines. Combined with a deep, narrow-twist seat, this pocket anchors your pelvis over the horse's center of gravity, providing maximum seat stability without restricting your ability to post, stand in the stirrups, or move with the horse's stride.
